Facebook slows as Myspace grows

Myspace witnessed its first year-over-year growth in audience since February 2009. Much of this success is due to the introduction of a revamped music player earlier this year.  According to comScore, a digital tracking firm, Myspace had 28.8 million US visitors in October which is 1.4% more than the same time last year.

At the same time, Facebook which overthrew Myspace of its helm in 2009, witnessed its first ever double digit loss in US audience as the total US visitors count dropped to 149 million. This figure is 10.2 percent fewer than the US audience same time last year.

Two months ago, Myspace’s partial owner Justin Timberlake announced the release of the New Myspace. Even though the New Myspace is available only to few beta users, it has received a good reception from them. It was in March 2009, the number of visitors to MySpace started falling and by the time the Irish Based Specific media bought Myspace, monthly audience was steadily shrinking.

Back in November 2011, MySpace suffered its heaviest blow, losing 54.1% if its audience when compared to the same time one year prior. This prompted the company to release the revamped music player integrated with Facebeook. It was this move that helped to stop the hemorrhaging.

comScore figure showed an opposite trend for Facebook, which has now experienced a drop in the number of US audience for the fifth month running with the drop cross the 10% mark this month. Facebook has nothing to worry about as its audience are likely changing and not disappearing. comScore figures are based on the number of visitors from desktop computers. Facebook revealed that there is an increase of 61% in the number of mobile users world wide.

Facebook Gifts – The brand new FB gift store

With more than a billion users sharing their e-mail addresses, phone numbers and pictures, Facebook now wants them to share a little bit more : their real residential addresses and credit card numbers. Facebook recently launched a new service called gifts for the people in the United States (for now) to buy presents for their loved ones and friends in facebook.

Items in the facebook gift store varies from Dean and DeLuca spices, BabyGap pajamas and Hulu Plus subscriptions. Earlier this week facebook added iTunes gift cards to its gift store. This aggressive money making push comes after facebook’s dismal stock market debut. This is the same reason why facebook has stepped up mobile advertising and customizing facebook ads based on the users web browsing outside facebook.

All these efforts have had a profound effect in Wall Street. Analysts have now issued bullish projects to the Facebook stock, and the company is now almost 50% up from its lowest point at 26.15 $ per share.  There is still a long way to touch the initial offering price of 38 dollars per share.

Facebook has rented a warehouse in South Dakota to power the Facebook gifts store, and has also developed its own system to keep track of inventories and shipping. Although Facebook wouldn’t reveal how much it earns through each sales, it is believed to be somewhere around 15% cut of sales as Amazon.com charges the same for a similar arrangement.

The people in Facebook are praying that this move catches on, as it would give them a toehold in the $ 250 billion e-commerce market. Also it would help the company accumulate a new stream of personal data which will come as a great help in targeted advertisements.

“The hard part of facebook was aggregating billion users, Now it’s more about how to monetize those users without scaring them away” said a top analyst at Robert W.Baird.  Credit card information is already collected from users who play facebook games, but they are of limited constituency.  A wider audience may be persuaded to share their credit card information if they are reminded about their friend’s wedding or birthday. The gifts service was introduced in September following the acquisition of Karma, a mobile application. On the eve of holiday shopping season, the service was expanded earlier in November.

Mumbai Police who made facebook arrests suspended

Two policemen who arrested two young women for posting and liking a status message about a political leader were suspended from duty today. The move has been appreciated by a  lot of free speech advocates, who were against the arrests made by the policemen last week.  They blame India’s poorly defined internet law to be the root-cause to all the problems.

A department inquiry has been initiated against Ravindra Sengaonkar and Srikant Pingle, the suspended police officers. It all started when Shaheen Dhada, a 21 year old medical student for posting an update against the forced city-wide shutdown in Mumbai after a far-right political leader died. Renu Srinivasan who had liked that status update was also arrested and charged with engaging in speech that was offensive and hateful.

Ms. Srinivasan’s father told the media that he had no enmity with the policy and thanked the media and the country people for showing support for the release of his daughter. Both women were arrested and charged under Section 66A of the Information Technology act, which relates to statements that are likely to create hatred between two groups or classes of people. Charges against both the women haven’t been dropped but they were granted a bail last week.

What happened at Facebook IPO meeting that was held recently?

Recently, Facebook has conducted Initial Public Offering (IPO) event on Wall Street to discuss about the company’s progress and new ideas. As per reports from Kayla Tausche of CNBC, the meeting held has resulted in a new progress of trading debut for Facebook. The report from Tausche further stated that the meeting gathered at the company’s headquarters had gone unnoticed due of some factors.
In any company, there will be two typed of meetings, one for research analysts and another for the bankers underwriting the IPO. But in this event, they combined both the meetings into a single one which was held at Menlo Park, Calif. Even though members from both teams were present at the venue, for some legal reasons, they were not allowed to express their thoughts. There is no proof about what happened during the meeting or what analysts had expressed. But Tausche expresses that the talk would be on red flag raised by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on the company’s prospectus filing. This is because the SEC wants more detailed information of Facebook’s revenue stream and also about company’s resources that are available for handling its operation.
Based on reports from Wall Street journal clearly states that one key member of Facebook family did not attend the event. The report further clarifies that it was Mark Zuckerberg who did not join the other members on this particular day. The company’s financial officer offered Mark’s excuse for his absence saying that he was busy working to improve the service offered to his customers.

Facebook study visualizes the narcissism activities among its users

For a person who wants to be a narcissist can make use of Facebook as a tool to spread their anti-social thoughts. Facebook acts as a bridge to provide unwanted relationships and emotional communication among unwanted persons, says a recent study that was done by Professor Christopher Carpenter from the Western Illinois University. The study has been published in official journals of the International Society for the Study of Individual Differences. According to this study, the Professor defined narcissism as an admired state, disorder state and an increased sense of self-appraisal.
Using a Narcissistic Personality Center, Carpenter and his students surveyed 292 college students to measure their behavior in promoting Facebook – updating status, their photos, updating profile information, as well as seeking support from people for anti-social activities. The research also states that when people don’t respond to their activities these students get angry and post negative comments as their status. People who promoted themselves on Facebook got high scores i.e., by tagging them in photos and updating their news feed frequently. These people also have a high number of friends on their profile and are also related to negative self-promotion from various sources available on the site.
Finally, Carpenter said that to overcome the negative side of Facebook, it is necessary to conduct various researches for better understanding in improving the beneficial things and reducing the harmful aspects arising via the social networking site. Earlier, social media sites including Facebook and Twitter were criticized for acting as a vehicle for useless relationships and for the recently mentioned aspect of bullying people.

There is possibility of spying being done by a deactivated friend in Facebook

Facebook has several millions of users around the world. There are cases when even after some of your friends’ deactivate the account it still appears to be snooping periodically. A new research which was done by Shah Mahmood from University College London and UCL’s chair of Information communication technology, Yev Desmedt, has highlighted the new threat happening in Facebook accounts. They called this threat as a ‘zero-day privacy loophole’. According to their research, once a person deactivates his or her account, later the account gets reactivated without the knowledge of the owner of that account.
This threat is mainly because Facebook does not completely delete the deactivated account. Instead, they put these deactivated accounts in hibernation state that provides the advantage for hackers to make use of these accounts. So, it clearly clarifies that deleting an account Facebook doesn’t mean that the user is completely out of this site. There are possibilities that the site attacker can get into deactivated friend’s information and carries out operations like gathering information and once the process is complete they deactivate that account.
The concept behind this kind of attack is that when a user deactivates his account, he becomes invisible rather than completely getting deleted. Later the attacker makes use of this chance to snoop around their friends’ profile creating spam without leaving any proof for identity. The researchers further stated that this Facebook snooping is commonly used among marketers, detective agencies, governments, hackers, spammers and other criminals. Moreover Facebook does not send any notification to other users when a person deactivates an account. This kind of deactivation attack can be limited, if Facebook notifies users of their friend’s deactivation and reactivation of accounts, adds the researcher.

Exploitation and Outsourcing – Which Company do You Suspect?

If you are interested in knowing who screens flagged Facebook content, then you will be very shocked in the information you are about to read. Facebook uses outsourcing to get out of paying honest money to honest workers.
One story is of a twenty one year old man in Moroccan, Amine Dekourai, who only gets paid one dollar per hour. This is a very small fraction of minimum wage. To be more specific, it is one eighth of the minimum wage pay. He was hired by a company in California that has used oDesk to outsource. oDesk has Facebook and Google as its clients.
They are exploiting people that are suffering in the third world countries. They are forced to work jobs for a small wage that would normally pay well. Companies are taking advantage of their hard times to make sure their pockets stay full. This is immoral and unfortunately, these companies are getting away with it.

Is Facebook a Driving Distraction?

The Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has decided that he should ask automakers to redesign the electronic devices that allow drivers to access social networks to be disabled while cars are moving. He would like to see that the devices are incapable of being used while the car is in motion, therefore, the car must be in park during the use of these devices. The devices include devices that allow the driver to; manually text, browse the internet, enter addresses for navigation systems, and dialing a ten digit phone numbers.
This is in additional to the Government’s guidelines that were set forth in the year 2010. It goes along side the other rules that are concerning distracted driving. Distracted driving has already claimed three thousand, ninety two victims. It is a cause for concern and they plan to take care of the losses of lives due to carelessness even though the automakers have been doing their part since 2002.
